EARTH will provide graduate students and postdoctoral researchers with an interdisciplinary education and, through our close partnerships with the HVACR community, a rich experiential-research experience. Postdoctoral training and mentoring will leverage combined Center resources. In addition, EARTH will establish a new interdisciplinary Atmospheric Chemistry graduate program at the University of Hawaiʻi. EARTH’s unique collaborative efforts between Engineering, Chemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, Astronomy, and Planetology, will enable graduate students to learn sophisticated modeling/simulation approaches and cutting-edge experimental techniques that reach beyond the offerings of traditional disciplinary silos. Because UH is a MSI for Native Hawaiʻians and Pacific Islanders, EARTH expects to accept 10 URM students annually (~50 over 5 years). EARTH will conduct targeted recruitment with top-tier universities offering undergraduate atmospheric-chemistry certificate programs, undergraduate programs participating in EARTH, and Pacific-Rim universities. This program’s PhD graduates will become leaders in the HVACR industry, with unparalleled expertise in refrigerant chemical processes and global environmental impacts.
