Biography

Dr. DeFilippo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.  He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California-Berkeley in 2013 and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Kansas.  Before joining the University of Kansas in 2025, he spent over a decade in private industry, working globally in research, consulting, and commercialization roles for applications including renewable and conventional power, chemicals, fuels, food & beverage, metals, energy storage, and industrial electrification. His research focuses on characterizing and de-risking novel thermal technologies through experimental and numerical approaches.  He has authored peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers studying reactivity, phase transition, thermal behavior, and flow characteristics of a variety of multiphase systems.

Research

Dr. DeFilippo applies measurements, models, and financial analyses to characterize and evaluate thermal, fluid, and reactive systems for industrial, power, energy storage, and transport applications.
